Brunssum staff receives Professional Development Training on High North issues

Wednesday, 18 January NATO Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Headquarters Brunssum welcomed Brigadier Tor Rune Raabye, Deputy Assistant Chief of Operations for the Norwegian Defence Staff, as part of the ongoing headquarters professional development lecture series.

Delivering a lecture entitled ‘Security Challenges in the High North, a Norwegian Perspective' the presentation complemented earlier discussions on this geo strategically important area.

The lecture discussed the ongoing environmental changes that are influencing how the High North is being used by its coastal countries and the affect this is having in economic and political terms.

Brigadier Raabye has served in the Norwegian military since 1979; during this time he has under taken a number of appointments, including six months as a Contingent Commander in Afghanistan in 2005, and has graduated from defence colleges in Norway, the U.S., UK and Italy.

The professional development lecture series seeks to educate NATO personnel about NATO areas of interest, and also areas of geo political focus that may affect NATO member states. All with the aim that every Officer should leave their posting better educated about the important role NATO continues to play in maintaining peace and stability.

JFC Brunssum, the Netherlands is one of three NATO operational level commands in NATO Allied Command Operations (ACO). This year JFC Brunssum is in charge of NRF 2012. JFC Brunssum also serves as the higher headquarters for ISAF in Afghanistan, with ISAF as a primary mission and NATO Article 5 Operational Planning, Baltic Air Policing, Military Cooperation and NATO Response Force (NRF) among other major activities.
