"I warmly welcome today's decision by the North Atlantic Council to further authorize NATO Air Policing in the Baltic States with a continuous presence of fighters,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Wednesday, 8 February.
"This mission continues to demonstrate the Alliance's commitment to collective defence and solidarity for all its members,” he added.
Collaboration in air policing also exemplifies the kind of cooperation among Allies that will become increasingly important in the future, as we reconcile our security requirements with budgetary realities. This is the spirit of Smart Defence, which I expect to become a guiding principle for NATO at our Chicago Summit in May.
NATO Air Policing is one of the key aspects of common security and defence for the Alliance and preserving the integrity of NATO airspace is a collective task. Baltic Air Policing is one of the responsibilities among Enduring Tasks of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum.
JFC Brunssum, the Netherlands is one of three NATO operational level commands in NATO Allied Command Operations (ACO). JFC Brunssum also serves as the higher headquarters for ISAF in Afghanistan, with ISAF as a primary mission and NATO Article 5 Operational Planning, Baltic Air Policing, Military Cooperation and NATO Response Force (NRF) tasking among other activities.
